Local Born and Raised — 100% Shikaoi Origin
Crossbred cattle originated as a solution to ease the first birthing process for Holstein dairy cows. Dairy farmers typically use artificial insemination on female cows to initiate milk production. While each cow typically gives birth three times, the first birth can be particularly stressful and risky for the mother cow. To address this, Japanese Black Wagyu, which has a smaller birth size than Holsteins, was chosen.
Shikaoi Town began its crossbreeding initiative in the 1970s. As domestic demand for milk increased, the region promoted dairy and livestock production hand-in-hand. Only cattle that are born, raised, and processed entirely within Shikaoi Town are recognized as “Tokachi Shikaoi Beef.” The close integration of dairy and livestock production within a single region is exceptionally rare in Japan.
