WAGYU BEEF PRODUCTION & BREEDING
Generously marbled, mouth-watering Wagyu beef that's really in a decadent class of its own!
Wagyu are a special breed of beef. Originating in Japan, Wagyu are Japanese cows known for their distinct flavour and fat marbling profile, making the meat a uniquely tender & juicy beef that stands above all other breeds in terms of flavour & texture experience. Wagyu, also known as Kobe beef in Japan, is in a class of its own for it's delicious, melt-in-your-mouth superior taste.
At Prairie Prime Wagyu, we're raising these beef to maintain their natural, characteristic generous marbling of omega oils in the meat; creating healthy beef with a unique, luxurious flavour experience for you.
Prairie Prime Wagyu are grazed naturally and raised humanely; without steroids, feed antibiotics or hormones . . . because we have plenty of fresh water, grass, grains and clean air for these animals to help themselves to on the lush Alberta pastureland they call home!
We take care to feed and raise our wagyu in a natural, stress-free environment; ensuring the time, personal care and superior feed they need to produce the most intense marbling in this high-quality meat while respecting the integrity of the land, water and their value.
Genetics and Breeding
Prairie Prime Wagyu operate a commercial purebred herd of mostly Japanese Black Wagyu. Our herd started from nine embryos purchased at $9500.00 each in the mid-nineties and we bought our foundation herd of 35 of these in 2015
The female calves were out of sires including Mazda, Sato (Mt. Fuji), Mitchifuku and Haruki II. The bull calves came out of 2RTR Polled Gold(Rueshaw) and Sato (Mt. Fuji). The herd was then line bred to one of the Sato bulls.
We also have a red line (Rueshaw) that we are experimenting with in our breeding program. This line will provide larger frames and better gains but will give up on marbling. We believe there is a market for this line as an F1 breeder.
Wagyu are known for their outstanding ease of calving & are excellent for improving ease of calving across other breeds. They are very fertile from a young age and the bulls have a high serving capacity. Females reach sexual maturity early as well
.
They are quite versatile and adaptable to environment, making excellent grazers. Wagyu generally have a calm temperament and respond well to gentle handling and a stress-free environment. Raising Wagyu is an easily sustainable endeavour.
The production of wagyu beef in Japan is highly regulated to maintain only the best-proven genetics for breeding. Wagyu in Japan are considered a National treasure and have been banned for export. In Australia, wagyu were first acquired from fullblood descendants of Japanese stock and they have since maintained fullblood and purebred stock as the largest producers of wagyu worldwide. Only a small amount of fullblood wagyu are available in North America for breeding, making it a rare and special thing to have a purebred herd.
Prairie Prime purebred Wagyu are descendants of Japanese black and red stock and make up our foundation herd, consisting of purebred dams and sires, which have to be at least 93-97% purebred.
