Located in the northern part of Iwate, roughly halfway between Morioka and Hachinohe, Okunakayama is near Appi Kogen, a popular destination for winter sports. The area lies on a plateau at the intersection of the Ou Mountains to the west and the Kitakami Mountains to the east, characterized by a cool, highland climate—short summers and long, snowy winters.

This region is a pure agricultural area, suited to dairy farming, livestock raising, and highland vegetable cultivation, all in harmony with its climate and natural landscape.
