Miyazaki Beef refers to Japanese Black cattle born and raised in Miyazaki Prefecture, with the longest fattening period also taking place in the prefecture. Only those with a meat quality grade of 5 or 4, as determined by the Japan Meat Grading Association, and descended from prefecture-designated or livestock improvement sires are recognized as Miyazaki Beef.
There are over 500 certified Miyazaki Beef specialty stores across Japan and overseas. The beef is delivered through an integrated system that spans from production and fattening to meat processing and sales. In December 2017, Miyazaki Beef was registered as a Geographical Indication (GI) under Japan's law protecting the names of specific agricultural, forestry, and fishery products (Registration No. 55 by the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries).
